Distinguished and Famous people from Central Gippsland

📚 Mary Grant Bruce

Mary Grant Bruce was born near Sale in 1878 and attended school there before building a career in journalism and children's fiction. Her Billabong series began with A Little Bush Maid, published as a book in 1910 after appearing in serial form. Gippsland family life and visits to pastoral properties supplied part of the background to her interest in horses and country experience. Readers should also recognise the books as products of their era, carrying social assumptions as well as adventure. Her local beginnings preceded the long-running fictional life of the Linton family.
